Australia’s Best Camping & Bushwalking Spots for March

Planning a camping or bushwalking trip this March?

As summer fades, cooler autumn weather makes March one of the best times to explore Australia’s national parks. Many great campsites are located close to bushwalking tracks, making it easy to spend the day hiking and the evening relaxing at camp.

Here are a few popular camping spots within driving distance of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth that are perfect for an autumn outdoor getaway.

1. Dunphys Campground (Near Sydney)

Dunphys Campground is located in Megalong Valley within Blue Mountains National Park, about 2–2.5 hours from Sydney.

Surrounded by open grasslands and eucalyptus forest, the campground offers a quiet and natural camping experience. Several bushwalking tracks are nearby, making it a great base for exploring the Blue Mountains.

The campground is a basic nature campsite without powered sites, making it ideal for tents and campervans. Visitors should also note that the final section of the access road is unsealed, so a 4WD vehicle is recommended.

This park is known for its spectacular coastal scenery and diverse wildlife. The campground sits near Norman Beach and the Tidal River, offering easy access to both beach and forest environments.

Visitors can also explore nearby highlights such as Mount Oberon and Squeaky Beach, along with a variety of scenic bushwalking trails.

Due to its popularity, it is recommended to check campsite availability and make reservations in advance before visiting.

  • Twin Falls

  • Natural Bridge

  • Purling Brook Falls

This campground is tent-only and not suitable for caravans. Facilities are limited, and there are no shower facilities or rubbish bins, so visitors should prepare their own hygiene supplies and plan to take their rubbish with them.
