Here's where to go, and what to pack.
Father's Day is coming up, and in Australia it lands on the first Sunday of September — 6 September 2026 this year. It's the very start of spring, which means crisp mornings and warmer afternoons — good conditions for getting outside with Dad.
If you're stuck on where to go rather than what to buy, here's a list to get you started.
Go for a Bushwalk
A classic Father's Day activity that needs no bookings and no gear beyond good shoes.
- Sydney: The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk (~6km, 2–3 hours), or trails through Sydney Harbour National Park (Manly, North Head, Hermitage Foreshore).
- Brisbane: Hinterland forests and national parks around the city, with waterholes and wildlife spotting along the way.
- Perth: The Swan View Tunnel in John Forrest National Park — a ~5km walk that takes in the National Park Falls too.
Pack a Picnic
Grab lunch or a BBQ kit and head to a local park.
- Melbourne: Royal Botanic Gardens, or a stroll through Fitzroy Gardens past Cook's Cottage.
- Brisbane: South Bank Parklands, which often runs family-friendly Father's Day events with live music.
- Perth: Try a playground you've never visited before, and bring the BBQ gear along.
Go Fishing
A generational classic — no big conversation needed, just time together by the water. Perth dads often head to the Swan River or the coast, but most regions have a reliable local spot.
Visit the Zoo or Aquarium
A good backup if the weather's unpredictable or the kids are along for the day. Melbourne Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary both run special Father's Day events, and SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium is always an option.
BBQ or Camp Out
Sometimes the simplest option is the best one — a backyard BBQ, or a night at a nearby campsite. Spring mornings still run cool, so layer up.
Golf, or a Game on the Telly
For the more relaxed dad, a round of golf or catching the AFL finals (September is finals month) makes for an easy, low-key day.
